Dear Elm Creek Junior High & High School Families,
We are looking closely at all skills we want our students to have upon graduation from high school. One of those skills is the ability to complete tasks on time and successfully. Turning in assignments, completing tasks when asked, and finishing long term projects on time are essential to anyone successfully employed. Although many of us may take this ability for granted there are actually several skills involved to be successful at on-time completion. Time management, organization, communication, and setting priorities and goals are all part of successfully completing tasks on time. As of now, our students have unlimited time to turn in late work. Our concern is by allowing students this unlimited time we are failing to help them understand what it actually means to have a deadline or to practice the skills mentioned above. To address this issue we are going to change how we handle late work. Beginning second semester students will no longer have unlimited time to turn in late work but will have 7 calendar days to turn in an assignment past the due date. We believe that this new expectation, along with coaching and instruction on how to manage time and set goals, and our Essential Time at the end of the day, will help students better develop their abilities in this area.
